Determination of young's modulus of electrochemically co-deposited Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite

Abstract

Electrochemically co-deposited Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite has many excellent properties and is a promising material for MEMS applications. in this study, Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite microcomponents were produced using various electric current densities and their Young's moduli were extracted from the deflection curves of composite cantilevers in bending experiments. Nanoindentation tests were conducted to find local properties. The study shows that Young's modulus of Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite is approximately 202 GPa when deposited at 45 degrees C and current density of 10 mA/cm(2), but dramatically drops to 67 GPa when the deposition current density increases to 60 mA/cm(2). In comparison with electrodeposited pure Ni, Ni-Al2O3 nanocomposite shows an enhanced elastic property. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V All rights reserved.
