Abstract

Our goal in writing this paper is to consider how user interfaces for decision support could be developed using the concept of Influence Diagrams. Working from the question of how to support Visual Analytics in the rail domain, we observed personnel in Incident Control Centres in order to appreciate the challenges that they face and the information to which they currently have access. From these observations, we developed a set of decision rules which were captured in the form of Influence Diagrams and these were used to inform user interface designs. It is proposed that the approach provides a complimentary approach to Ecological Interface Design by reflecting key elements of decision tasks in the interface design.
