Abstract

In the two centuries-long querelle on the Epistle to Cangrande, the last twenty years have seen a new flourishing in the critical debate, which is given here, as far as possible, a precise and fair account. No doubt, it has been philology, for so long in the shade, to play a decisive role in allowing the question to be settled. Moving beyond the problem of authorship, then, it is now possible to look at some critical issues in a new perspective, beginning with the nature of the allegory displayed by both the Canticle of Salomon and Dante’s Canticle. It is argued that the "allegory of the theologian" claimed by Dante for his work is not the one considering the Bible as a whole, but instead the very special tropological interpretation reserved to the Canticle of Canticles and the other poetic books of the Bible.
