Contact mechanics of single particle compression and bulk compression of single component and binary mixtures of particles

Abstract

The compaction of particulate materials to make tablets is increasingly employed as a final dosage form for functional products due to its simplicity and low cost. However, the functionality of some products may be impaired due to the high compression pressures required. Pharmaceutical tablets generally consist of a number of components, which all contribute to the final properties of tablets. Therefore, it is of interest to be able to predict the compaction behaviour of powder mixtures based on the mechanical properties and compaction behaviour of individual components. However, this is a challenging task due to the complexity and diversity of pharmaceutical blends. Here, mixtures of two pharmaceutical excipients of different hardnesses were selected in order to investigate some of the controlling factors. The importance of the relative proportions of the ingredients has been studied in relation to the compactability of the respective single components.
