Abstract

The article analyses the finds of Byzantine coins in Scandinavia and the Slavic lands in the 9th and 10th centuries and discusses the possible reasons for their inflow, in particular the slave trade and the remittances of the mercenaries. It constitutes the first comprehensive review of evidence including all the territories of the Viking-Slavic world, i.e. in addition to Scandinavia, also Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Estonia, and other countries of Centreal and Eastern Europe.
