Abstract

This first monograph in English on the major French author Andre du Bouchet (1924-2001) examines temporal forms in his writing, encompassing his prose and verse poetry, translations, art writing, essays and notebooks. The book proposes a reading of Du Bouchet's work that shows the contribution poetic writing can make to critical debates on attention in literature, arguing that through temporal form his work nuances understandings of attention and distraction, and reveals the importance of writing and reading poetry to the tolerance of uncertainty.
