Mike White's work covers many aspects of human physiology including thermoregulation, muscle fatigue, disuse and the ageing process as well as cardiovascular and respiratory control mechanisms during exercise in health and disease. Recent work from his laboratory has explored the synergistic effect of muscle afferent activation combined with mild hypercapnia to increase ventilation in exercise. This has applications to and may help to explain excessively high ventilation during exercise in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease or heart failure.

Dr White has supervised over 20 students to successful completion of their PhD or MSc and welcomes applications from prospective PhD students.
