Madeleine Smith’s research interests centre on the implementation of Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) and food safety management systems, especially in small food businesses. She also looks at the value of such systems in ensuring food chain security. She is also interested in other interventions such as food hygiene training and licensing in the food industry. Areas in which she has supervised doctoral research include the implementation of food safety management systems in SMEs in the UK and Cyprus, and examining food hygiene training as a prerequisite in HACCP.
