Konstantinos ("Kostas") Skalomenos is Assistant Professor in the School of Engineering of the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. He graduated from the Department of Civil Engineering of the University of Patras, Greece, in 2007. He received his M.Sc. in 2009 and Ph.D. in 2014 from the same University. As part of his Ph.D. thesis, he worked on design and analysis of composite structures involving steel beams and concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns. In 2015, Kostas moved to Japan as international post-doctoral research fellow of Kyoto University awarded by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS). In 2017, he was appointed as Specially Apptd. Assistant Professor of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute (DPRI), Kyoto University. In Japan, Kostas mainly studied the ultimate failures and collapse of steel and composite structures as experimentalist. His professional experience includes roles as Structural Engineer in seismic assessment and retrofit of old existing structures in 2013-2015 and as Construction Quality Engineer in the infrastructure management and construction company of Hellenic Telecommunications Organization in 2008-2011.
Kostas' research is mainly directed towards understanding the structural response under earthquake and wind loads, controlling the structural vibration and damage, and coping with large-scale disasters. Currently, Kostas conducts research on deterioration modelling for collapse analysis of structures and sub-structure based hybrid testing of critical subparts; conceptual development of buckling-reduced steel bracing technologies and low-damage highly energy dissipative connections; and establishment of multi-level damage-controlled design methods and technical quidance.
