PhD projects

Jet Veldhuijzen van Zanten is interested in the effects of behaviour, such as mental stress and physical activity, on physiological function. She has conducted a series of studies that involve the psychophysiological responses to mental stress in a laboratory setting. In particular, the role of inflammation on the vascular responses to mental stress has been explored both in healthy participants and clinical populations (rheumatoid arthritis and cardiac patients). Different paradigms are used to experimentally assess the effects of inflammation, which include the use of a vaccine or eccentric exercise to induce inflammation, as well as medication and physical activity interventions to reduce inflammation. Another research area concerns the effects of physical activity on psychological and physiological factors in clinical populations such as rheumatoid arthritis, as well as healthy participants. A particular interest is in the interactions between the psychological and physiological factors. She welcomes applications from prospective doctoral researchers in all her areas of interest.
