Jane McKeating

Willingness to take PhD students

PhD projects

Jane McKeating’s research interests focus on the molecular biology of hepatitis C virus (HCV), with a particular emphasis on the role of glycoprotein diversity in virus escape from host immune responses and receptor-dependent virus entry. HCV utilises a complex multi-receptor endocytic process to enter cells, and recent observations demonstrate an essential role for tetraspanin CD81, scavenger receptor BI and the tight junction proteins Claudin-1 and Occludin in virus internalisation. Recently developed single particle tracking and FRET imaging techniques allow her group to monitor receptor trafficking in living cells and to ascertain the role of receptor complexes in HCV entry and transmission within polarised cells.

Professor McKeating and the HCV group are actively involved in the supervision and mentoring of doctoral research students in all areas of clinically relevant HCV disease.
