Hugh Evans’s main research aims are to understand, predict and improve the behaviour of metals and alloys at high temperatures, often in chemically aggressive environments.

Professor Evans's current research projects include:

Oxidation of and oxidation/fatigue interactions in Ni-based superalloys
Creep of high-strength austenitic steels
Steam oxidation of Fe-based alloys
Modelling oxide spallation
Mechanisms of failure of thermal barrier coatings
Development of new high-temperature coating systems to reduce CO2 emissions from land-based gas turbines
