Carmel McConville’s research interests include the childhood cancers neuroblastoma and retinoblastoma. The aim of her research is to obtain a clear understanding of tumour genetics and molecular biology, and to translate this into improved clinical management and more effective treatment for patients. The approach taken involves analysis of the tumour transcription and epigenome using microarray technology and, in parallel, investigation of the tumour metabolome using magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Functional investigation of the biological consequences of identified aberrantly regulated molecular pathways is carried out in tumour cell lines and in vivo relevance confirmed by immunohistochemical investigation of tumour tissue.
