About us

Our School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences is one of the longest established in Europe for scientific research into sport, exercise, health and rehabilitation.

In 1946 we became the first university in the UK to offer a degree in Sport and Exercise Sciences that extended beyond the boundaries of Physical Education. Our research underpins our teaching and investigates topical issues such as the workings of the healthy body and the way in which physical activity promotes health and well-being.

We are proud to be at the forefront of the rapid development of this academic discipline. Our school has achieved an outstanding performance in the Research Excellence Framework 2014 (REF 2014) with 90 percent of its research classified as world leading or internationally excellent. These results provide further compelling evidence of the long recognised research strength of Sport and Exercise Sciences at the University of Birmingham.
