About us

Research at Birmingham has been at the forefront of investigations into language for decades.

We use a wide range of methods including the analysis of large corpora, critical analysis of texts and images, observation of naturalistic interactions and psycholinguistic experimentation. Our work takes a multimodal approach to language and encompasses spoken, written and signed languages, gesture and animal communication. The work carried out in the department is multidisciplinary in nature and intersects with other disciplines such as pedagogy, business and cognitive sciences. Our findings resonate in non-academic settings and have implications for education, health care, crime prevention, deafness, media and advertising.

UN Sustainable Development Goals

In 2015, UN member states agreed to 17 global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all. Our work contributes towards the following SDG(s):

  • SDG 3 - Good Health and Well-being
  • SDG 5 - Gender Equality
  • SDG 6 - Clean Water and Sanitation
  • SDG 10 - Reduced Inequalities
  • SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production
  • SDG 13 - Climate Action
  • SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
