The education and training we provide transforms students into professionals equipped with the knowledge and skills to deliver top-rate, 21st-century healthcare and carry out life-changing medical research. This is informed by pedagogy and by research in the fields of dentistry, nursing, pharmacy and medical and life-sciences.
Bringing together our excellent educators and health professional researchers into one Institute allows us to focus clearly on our collective goals. It enables us to share good practice and be more strategic, as well as more reactive in our approach.
First-class teaching is crucial to ensuring our students – the biomedical and healthcare workforce of the future – get the very best out of their time at Birmingham, so delivering an outstanding student experience is a top priority. We already enjoy strong links with our student bodies; having an Institute to which all students within the College belong to will strengthen those further. We are also one of few UK centres with the ability to deliver a diverse inter-professional education and we want to further develop this important aspect of training.
We are proud of our record in widening participation and are keen that our student intake reflects the diversity of the population they will serve and be part of. We are committed to providing students from all backgrounds with the chance to achieve their potential through the opportunity to study, research and ultimately to work in their chosen fields.
Maintaining excellence in our teaching provision is also a big part of what we do; pedagogy has an important role to play at Birmingham and we are committed to helping our teachers to realise their ambitions, and fulfil their passion for teaching and research. As a large Institute, there is enormous potential for evidence-based, educational research. Our size provides us with the necessary critical mass to develop our research ambitions within the University and further afield through provision of financial and intellectual support and encouragement. We are already known for our outstanding teaching; our vision is also to become a recognised educational research-leading centre. We will continue to maintain cutting-edge research, particularly in the fields of dentistry, nursing and pharmacy that aims to make a difference to patients’ lives.
Our ambition is to make our College the preferred choice for talented graduate students and healthcare professionals who wish to continue their education. We will look to forge closer ties with our key partners, including the NHS, and to develop Continuing Professional Development programmes that are both appropriate and timely. Our impressive portfolio of Graduate Training programmes reflects our research strengths and provides opportunities for student development.
