Organisation profile

The Department of African Studies and Anthropology has over 50 years’ experience and expertise in supporting students from all over the world, including Africa.

We integrate cutting-edge and world-leading research on Africa with distinctive inter-disciplinary teaching at the  undergraduate and postgraduate level. Our staff are ready to share their expertise in anthropology, history, human geography, development, literature, media, popular culture and religion.  This is how we create a warm and informal atmosphere for genuinely innovative learning. Our doctoral students join us from all over the world to produce pioneering new research on Africa, across the disciplines.

The department has particular strengths in social and cultural anthropology, and we put anthropology into dialogue with other academic disciplines and with developmental and humanitarian concerns.
