The Republican Origins of Imperial Ideals: A view from the Coinage

A public lecture given as part of a series organised by the Radboud University, Nijmegen as part of the research project: 'Constraints and Tradition. Roman power in changing societies (50 BCE - 565 CE)'.

This lecture considered the role of traditional values and ideals in debates on the nature of the state during the final disintegration of the Republican political system and how the communication and contests over ownership of such ideals laid the foundations for a framework of Imperial ideals. The continuation and adoption of Republican political ideals in the new imperial system is further evidence of the use of Republican structures to shape and mould the newly emerging political system under Augustus; that indeed, traditional ideals from a Republican framework were used to help construct an imperial communication of power.
