Abstract

Recent years have seen significant progress towards ending all forms of discrimination against women and girls everywhere, until the onset of COVID-19 put an abrupt end to many encouraging developments. The relationship between religion and gender equality is long and complex as many religions are not exactly known to be on the forefront of the fight against gender-based inequalities. Yet religion is a crucial factor in this matrix. Religion serves to cement or challenge traditional gender roles and to uphold or transform harmful practices such as child marriage or female genital mutilation (FGM). In a final part of this chapter, Sandra Iman Pertek, UK, explores the role of Islam in violence against women and girls.

Bibliographical note

Sandra Iman Pertek has contributed: 'Spotlight: A Muslim perspective on gender equality and violence against women and girls (VAWG)', ch.8, p.80-83
'In this reflection, I shed light on Islam, gender equality, and VAWG. I argue that there is a compelling Islamic case against gender injustice, but high illiteracy, conflict, and problematic exegesis compound gender inequality underpinning VAWG. General and religious illiteracy, entailing lack of awareness of women’s rights, and gender inequalities go hand in hand. Varied religious interpretations can enable patriarchal cultural understandings of religious teachings. I first outline diverse Muslim gender perspectives, followed by exploring a Muslim case for gender equality and ending VAWG, and then discuss the status quo.'
