Abstract

The same 2021 census which revealed Christianity was now a minority in England and Wales also came up with another surprising revelation. The fastest growing religion in the UK is Shamanism. The census found that 8,000 people identified as Shamanic followers, up from only 650 a decade before. The rise of the spiritual belief system is in large part driven by Millennials and Gen Z. What is Shamanism, why has it become so popular, and what makes it a religion? At a time when traditional organized religion is on the decline, what makes this spiritual movement so enticing?
