    Abstract

The thesis explores the phenomenon of why dairy farmers continue to farm. Critically assessing the economic paradigm and it’s relevance in assessing family business operations lead me to explore the sociological paradigm, as economic theory disregards social and cultural factors. Bourdieu’s theory of field, habitus and capital is used as a conceptual tool to explore the operations of family dairy farms. Using Bourdieu in family business provides a new insight into how these businesses operate and unveil the key factors driving the farmer to continue farming.
