A ventilator system (10) comprising: a ventilator (110) operable to provide forced mechanical ventilation; a breathing pattern controller (111) configured to operate the ventilator according to a breathing pattern; and a breathing pattern communication unit (112) operable to in use transmit a trigger signal, according to the breathing pattern. The ventilator system (10) may further comprises an associated medical device (113), with the breathing pattern communication unit (112) configured to transmit a trigger signal to the associated medical device (113).
