Using Terahertz Time-domain Spectroscopy to Measure Coating Thickness on Li-ion Electrodes

Abstract

Terahertz sensing is competently used in nondestructive testing such as paint coating inspection on the car bodies, plastic inspection etc. In this paper, for the first-time, terahertz spectroscopy is applied to inspect cathodes in battery manufacturing process. A terahertz signal distribution across a cathode detect a defect in the cathode coating on the edge of the cathode. Also, the thickness of two lithium nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) cathodes are measured by a terahertz sensor and their thickness difference is reported.
