Abstract
The under-representation of minority ethnic teachers in the teaching profession can have important implications for both students and the profession itself. This article presents the results of a secondary analysis of the School Workforce Census and the Initial Teacher Training Performance Profiles, showing the changing trends in the ethnic composition of the teaching workforce in England, and the factors that contribute to the disproportionate representation of minority ethnic teachers in schools. It then discusses why an ethnically diverse teaching workforce matters and what can be done to address the situation. One suggestion is that schools can ensure that their curricula reflect the diversity of the student body, and that all students have access to resources and opportunities that are relevant to their background.
