Abstract

A brief historical overview of sonar development is presented in this paper. The performance of a sonar system is often directly related to the performance of the associated non-acoustic sensors. Different types of no acoustic sensors that might be used in various applications is briefly listed in this paper. The accuracy and resolution of a non-acoustic sensor should be greater than the related parameter of the sonar system. Cost is vitally important as many of the components of a sonar system should be deployed in a very large numbers or be considered expendable.
