Theoretical and methodological approaches to understanding emerging industries

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter (peer-reviewed)peer-review

Abstract

The chapter argues that an important part of the future of research on manufacturing will be exploring the emergence of new industries and the legitimacy-building process that allows this to occur. It empirically focuses on the disruptive innovation and regulatory change in the space sector, which has led to the emergence of ‘New Space’ or Space 2.0. It explores the ‘European Cluster Observatory Research classification system’ as one route to defining an emerging industry and demonstrates the challenge of researching a sector without a fixed SIC code. The chapter also outlines the multi-scalar structures/processes that led to legitimacy building for Space 2.0.
