Abstract

Wilkie Collins refused to publish his first drama, 'The Lighthouse', in Britain due to the lack of dramatic copyright protection. Collins therefore only published the script in France, in French; this then, is the first edition of a transcript of the LCP manuscript held at the BL. The edition includes Charles Dickens's contributions to the play - an original Prologue and 'The Song of the Wreck' , a translation by Radcliffe of Collins's original French introduction and an introduction by Andrew Gasson and Caroline Radcliffe discussing the play's history and related primary sources. The introduction is notable for its inclusion of new research and previously unknown illustrations and includes a Foreword by the crime writer P.D. James. The edition is an important contribution to the unpublished dramatic works of WIlkie Collins, none of which were previously in print.
