Abstract

The cities are growing dramatically, while adding to the climate challenges. The construction industry has been criticised for generating high volumes of waste and obstructing Sustainable Development Goal (SDGs) targets. The UN Climate Change Conference in Glasgow (COP26) conveyed together 120 world leaders where the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the increase in the global average temperature to below 2 ℃ and pursuing efforts to limit it to 1.5 ℃ was reinforced. The countries must accelerate the development and implementation of innovative technologies, along with the adoption of policies, to transition towards low-emission energy systems, through rapidly scaling up the deployment of clean power generation and energy efficiency measures. It is important to realise that the technology is a fundamental element of the global efforts to get to net-zero; nevertheless, its implementation in the construction industry requires practical adjustments as the sector transitions from current routines’ to a more climate-friendly one.
