Abstract

In this paper the True Digital Control (TDC) system design methodology is applied to the industrial piling rig shown in Figure 1. The aim is to control the verticality of the rig’s mast and, subsequently, position the mast over a given pile location. An overview of the TDC design philosophy and the resulting Proportional-Integral-Plus (PIP) control system for multi-input multi-output systems is presented. The TDC design procedure is outlined, together with results from implementation of a verticality control system on the piling rig. These results represent the first application of a multivariable PIP driven control system in the construction industry, and imply that TDC-PIP design methods have much to offer in this context.
