The Absent, The Partial and the Iconic in Archival Photos of the Holocaust

This article offers a critical analysis of archival photographs of the Holocaust. It explores what is – and is not – represented in such photographs, the range of approaches towards the use of photographs, particularly in museums, and some of the ethical questions these raise, for example, in relation to putting atrocity photographs on public display. This broader thematic discussion in the first part of the article is then applied to three case studies in the second part.
