Abstract
This paper presents the concept and synthesis method of transversal filtering antennas (TFAs). The working principles of the all-radiator TFA are comprehensively explained. The filtering functions of different TFAs are studied through both theoretical analysis and simulations. Several TFA designs, each with different filtering responses, are demonstrated, starting from coupling matrices derived from filter specifications. For the first time, detailed synthesis procedures are provided to transfer transversal coupling matrices into physical TFA structures. The proposed transversal filtering topology introduces a novel approach to enhancing antenna bandwidth and frequency selectivity. Dipole radiators are employed to illustrate the concept, and the characteristics of TFAs are examined comprehensively through three example designs. A proof-of concept prototype is fabricated and measured demonstrating good agreement between the simulated and measured results, thus validating the proposed design methodology.
