Abstract
The increasing salinity of the Aral Sea since 1960 has led to the extinction of all but one of the 11 ostracod species, the sole survivor being the eurhyaline Cyprideis torosa. This appears to have survived because it is capable of strong hypo-osmotic regulation. Although the Aral Sea underwent many changes in the Quaternary, the recent environmental changes are dramatic and have had a severe effect on the ostracod fauna. -K.Clayton
