This volume of 24 studies addresses, for the first time, a range of issues related to the "Chronicle" of Theophanes the Confessor, a major source for the transition of the Roman Empire from late antiquity to the middle ages. The contributions enable a much better understanding of this key source, often approached uncritically by the historians, and constitute a major advance in Late Antique and Byzantine studies.
