Abstract

This chapter investigates the migration and retention decisions of two Black American educational expatriates (EDPats) who transitioned from teaching positions in the United States to opportunities in the United Arab Emirates. Employing the concept of affective turnover, a novel theoretical framework in the field of education, this study provides a nuanced analysis of teacher turnover, emphasizing a specific affective connection between migration and retention. The results of this research present recommendations for international school leaders, policymakers, and educators to better comprehend the factors influencing teacher retention in international contexts.

Dr. Smith also hosts and produces the podcast (A)Broad in Education, which delves into the experiences of expatriate educational professionals, known as EDpats, working in schools outside their home countries. The podcast explores diverse topics such as the unique challenges and opportunities faced by EDpats.Before her current roles, Dr. Smith served as the Grants and Partnerships Manager at the Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi Foundation for Policy Research, where she contributed to educational policy and development initiatives.
