This chapter introduces and challenges the notion of the Rule texts from the Dead Sea Scrolls as a literary genre. While it is true to say that the Scrolls have revealed a very distinctive type of literature that deals with community organization and shares a penchant for the term serekh, the evidence emerges as more complex than customarily indicated. The notion of a genre of Rules is to a considerable extent heuristic with considerable scope for further refinement.
