Abstract
Rare earth permanent magnet materials offer truly remarkable properties when manufactured correctly. The form one of the key components for clean technologies, allowing us to build highly efficient electrical motors and generators. David Brown has been involved with the rare earth permanent magnet community since the mid-1990s. He was fortunate enough to work with the early pioneers of the industry, including those that drove the Concerted European Action on Magnets [CEAM] of the 1980s. In fact, many of these giants of our community would have delivered previous Ewing lectures.
In this particular talk the speaker will summarise his experiences in the rare earth magnet industry, from university labs to mass production facilities on three continents. He will outline the current landscape of the industry and detail some of the challenges it faces, as well as some potential solutions.
