    Abstract

    Since 2013, there has been an annual Postgraduate Researcher (PGR) Writing Summer School (WSS) at the University of Birmingham, offering PGRs in-person writing-themed workshops and discussions. In 2020, COVID-19 enforced a new format.
    The Postgraduate Researcher Online Writing Summer School 2020 (#PROWSS2020) ran over 5 days in mid-July with the theme “Writing Well”. Live and asynchronous content was delivered to self-enrolled PGRs via a VLE module.
    Engagement with #PROWSS2020 was good, including from many distance learners, and positive feedback was received. In future, the WSS will alternate between in-person and online formats, to capitalise on the advantages of both.
    Aims:
    The 5-minute pre-recorded video and supporting documents aim to:
    share with practitioners an example of a successful online writing summer school for PGRs;
    inspire practitioners to embrace the advantages of the online format, while being aware of potential disadvantages;
    provoke discussion to enhance future delivery of similar writing summer schools.
