Abstract
Effective teaching strategies play a central role in creating inclusive and engaging teaching and learning environments. The design and implementation of such strategies, which require a pedagogical approach that actively engages students in their own learning, can thus foster diversity, equity, and a sense of support and belonging. In an attempt to ascertain role models that promote inclusivity and encourage students’ motivation and engagement, this case study explores the gains of applying the constructivist learning theory as opposed to the transfer theory of learning by drawing valuable lessons from the popular Harry Potter series.
We start by examining the stark contrast between the teaching approaches of Professor Umbridge (as an example of the authoritarian transfer theory) and Harry Potter (an application of the constructivist theory), illustrating and highlighting their methods and outcomes. Then, we share our experience in creating an inclusive teaching environment that empowers students to actively construct knowledge, engage in critical thinking, collaborate, and acknowledge their individual differences. Through this approach, we show how one can foster a sense of support and belonging and ensure that every student's contribution is valued and respected in the classroom.
