Flow of cohesive powders during the die filling stage of pharmaceutical tabletting was analysed using a coupled discrete element method and computational fluid dynamics (DEM/CFD), in which a two-way air-particle interaction coupling mechanism was established for modelling the effect of the presence of air and the JKR theory was incorporated to simulate the interaction between cohesive particles. It has been found that for cohesive powders intermittent flow occurs, in which powder flows as chunks of agglomerates. In addition, make-up of vessel walls, arching and air entrapment can be induced.
