Abstract
The collocation 'polite conversation' was, in the time of Swift, less common in book titles, and in the body of books, than readers of his 'Polite Conversation' may assume. Analysis of the associations of the words 'polite' and 'conversation' in print in the period sheds new light on the significance of Swift's satirical guide.
