Abstract
This article explores the complex visual display and the multiple iconographic levels of Fritz Lang's Metropolis, giving particular emphasis to its pictorial and visual sources. This film stages a multifaceted urban reality where Gothic and Modernist architectural and pictorial paradigms are combined to deliver an allegory of modernity. This survey examines the structure and sets of visual references displayed in Metropolis, showing how the strict social hierarchy mirrored in the filmic configuration stems from the pictorial tradition and visual culture.
