Abstract

This interdisciplinary collection explores relationships between letters and bodies in the long eighteenth century. It is unique in its focus on a broad range of manuscript and printed letters written by women and men of different ranks in Britain, North America, India and the Caribbean. In eleven chapters, scholars from various disciplines apply different approaches to explore the imagined physical encounters and performances envisaged by letter-writers, the letter as a material object and an instrument for embodied encounters, and how correspondents purposefully used their bodies in letters as a means to create intimacy, to generate social networks and build a ‘body politic’.
