Abstract
In various businesses, waste is minimised and value increased by applying Mean' principles. Adopting a lean perspective, we have analysed the operation of a planned new high-speed railway to identify parameters that have the potential to influence positively the resource requirements during construction and the long term sustainable operation. We have found that, by optimising rather than minimising running times, combined with better management of turnarounds at termini, we can reduce both the first and the life-cycle cost of high-speed railways. Despite reducing land-take in city centres and lowering energy consumption, it is still possible to ensure reliable operations.
