Abstract
Iodine is an integral component of thyroid hormone. It is unevenly distributed globally and over a billion people currently live in areas with substantial iodine deficiency. This article describes optimal iodine nutrition, the consequences of iodine deficiency, the means for correcting it, and current global status.
