Abstract
This research aims to understand the erodibility of Cement-Bentonite Barrier (CBB) using Hole Erosion Test (HET). Past studies on CBB erodibility did not provide adequate characterisa-tion mainly due to method and apparatus used in the testing. Two types of CBB mixes cured for 7, 30 and 90 days investigated in the study: CBB with Fly Ash (FA) and/or ground granulated blast furnace (GGBS). Two key parameters were used to evaluate CBB erodibility: hydraulic shear stress and erosion rate. It was discovered that the improvement of the erosion resistance of CBB was dependent on the curing duration and material mixes. The critical hydraulic shear stress increased and erosion rate decreased with curing time. The critical hydraulic shear stress was higher and the erosion rate was lower for CBB material containing GGBS than PFA. The improvement rate of the erosion resistance was more significant at the early stage of curing than the later stage.
