Abstract
A comparison between the internal energies imparted to Nylon-6 oligomers by an external electrospray ionization (ESI) source and an internal matrix assisted laser desorption/ionization (MALDI) source, was discussed. The ESI source made use of collision gas to facilitate trapping while the internal MALDI source was operated with no gas assistance. The configuration examined the extremes of internal energy deposition in these two, most popular of soft ionization sources. It was found that the Nylon-6 had a tendency to dissociate in a stepwise fashion, fragmenting along the amide backbone one repeat unit at a time with occasional water losses.
