Abstract

Infernal Waves depicts Dante’s journey through the fifth circle of hell, Wrath. Crossing the River Styx, the waters surge and churn, embodying the chaos and despair of the damned. Above water, bodies rend and snarl at each other whilst below, the sullen are unable to express themselves for the rage that chokes them.

Inspired by the text’s strong environmental imagery, the piece is composed using layers of field recordings, some in their raw form to depict the waters of the river whilst others are manipulated and transformed to create sonic textures that represent the scene’s tortured souls.
