'Industry 4.0' awareness and readiness within the vento region (Italy)

Abstract

This paper contributes to the increasing literature surrounding industry 4.0. The objective of this paper is twofold (1) the identification of the parameters industry 4.0, i.e., the key enabling components and design principles of industry 4.0, and (2) the assessment of the awareness and readiness level of manufacturing firms within the Vento region of Italy. The study utilises a survey of 1829 firms in assessing their level of readiness and awareness. The findings from our study suggest that disparities in communication are present between private and public sector organisations, with current policy initiatives and access to funding not necessarily coinciding with the demands of organisations within the region. This research paper has laid the foundation for the further research in how industrial strategy needs to further elicit information from private sector firms in order to further promote the building of awareness, readiness, and adoption of industry 4.0 technologies and practices.
