Improving the effectiveness of performance support in elite football: introducing the “Football Performance Support Model”

Abstract

Purpose: To understand key stakeholder’s perceptions of effective performance support in professional football.

Methodological Approach: This research utilized qualitative data captured from in-depth semi-structured interviews with senior leaders in professional football (= 13). To help achieve the aim of the study, sporting directors (SD), head coaches, and heads of performances from England and Scotland were purposively invited to take part in the study. All interviews were reviewed and analysed to identify themes and sub-themes.

Findings: Effective performance support in professional football is aligned to simultaneously supporting the club’s vision and head coach’s approach. Additionally, it has clearly defined Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) which contribute to the delivery of the football strategy. Finally, it is delivered by practitioners with effective professional, interpersonal, and intrapersonal knowledge, and is regularly reviewed.

Practical Implications: This paper provides clarity on the requirements for effective performance support. This research provides key considerations, and strategic recommendations football leaders seeking to enhance performance departments.
