    Abstract

Polymorphisms in the promoter region of the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) affect the amount of amyloid peptide (A beta) in the brains of patients with Alzheimer's disease. We measured A beta load immunohistochemically in regions 8 and 9 of Brodman's area in 74 people with Alzheimer's disease. The amount of A beta deposition was independent of APOE genotype in our cohort. These findings in patients with confirmed Alzheimer's disease are consistent with the hypothesis that variation it; AWE expression directly affects Alzheimer's disease pathology.
